Last season, I wrote an article that was essentially concerned with reconciling the problem of wanting to play at a high rate of speed and yet maintaining the benefits of possessing the ball. Here are the ten key points I tried to make in the article.

  1. Run and gun style of basketball generates excitement but often results in sloppy play and poor shot selection
  2. Coaches should strive to integrate speed and solid basketball fundamentals for a more effective playing style.
  3. Defensive principles should focus on slowing down ball movement, preventing straight line penetration, and denying entry into the high post.
  4. Emphasizing the integration of offense and defense helps players understand their roles better.
  5. Defense plays a crucial role in starting the offense by forcing turnovers, creating steals, and securing rebounds.
  6. Defensive rebounding should be regarded as part of the offense, emphasizing the importance of gaining control of the ball.
  7. Coaches need to enforce good ball-handling, passing, and shot selection even in a fast-paced game.
  8. Offensive strategies should benefit the defense by valuing possessions, making smart passes, and attacking the rim.
  9. Quick, direct-line drives and inside-out passing lead to higher-percentage shots and increased offensive efficiency.
  10. Playing fast does not mean playing recklessly; players should be encouraged to make intelligent decisions and maintain structure on the court.
